While receiving treatment for substance addiction at Summit Malibu rehabilitation center in California, the 25-year-old experienced a sudden cardiac arrest that would leave her with severe and permanent disabilities.
Medical Crisis and Immediate Aftermath
Following her cardiac arrest, Willis was rushed to a hospital where she was placed in a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator. For approximately eight weeks, she remained unresponsive, with her family preparing for the worst possible outcome.The situation was particularly heartbreaking as toxicology reports revealed no drugs in her system at the time of hospitalization, contradicting initial reports of an apparent overdose.
Current Health Condition
Today, Willis remains permanently disabled as a result of an anoxic brain injury sustained when she was deprived of oxygen for too long following the medical crisis. Though she has emerged from the vegetative state she was in for months, her condition remains profoundly challenging. She is paralyzed with only the use of her eyes, cannot speak, but can make noises and appears to have moments of connection with her mother.
According to her attorney Phoebe Morris, “If you were asking her mother, her mother would say ‘yes, I can communicate with her and understand her albeit not in a verbal sense.'” Despite these small connections, Willis requires constant care and occasionally needs hospitalization for treatments that exceed what can be provided at home.
Legal Battle and Family Fight
In December 2024, Willis’s mother Yesenia Lara Cooper filed a lawsuit against Summit Malibu and its parent company Malibu Lighthouse Treatment Centers, alleging negligence in their care of her daughter. The lawsuit claims that Willis’s health deteriorated during her stay at the facility, with symptoms including dehydration, infection, and severe physical distress that were not properly addressed.
The family’s legal team argues that the rehabilitation center should have transferred Willis to a hospital earlier, “let the doctors put a feeding tube in her and treat her properly while she was still (coherent) and speaking and walking.” Summit Malibu has countered that they did not have authority to transport Willis to a hospital without her consent, claiming she had “refused to follow medical recommendations and take her medications.”
A trial is scheduled to take place in Santa Monica on May 6, 2026, though the case faces potential dismissal unless the family files with more evidence.
